I am Ari, a Concept Artists.
In this issue, we would like to introduce “4 manga with amazing backgrounds” chosen by a manga-loving Environment Art.
There is various manga with the best manga with great artwork, and among them, we will introduce manga that we refer to or are inspired by when drawing backgrounds.
We also have a video to show you how to do it. If you want to check them out thoroughly, please click here.
The first book is “A Bride’s Story”
A Bride’s Story/by Kaoru Mori
Overwhelming drawings at its best!
The characters’ costumes, ornaments, and dishes are wonderfully drawn and informative. The amount of drawing can be seen in the previous work, “Emma”.
The atmosphere of the large land and forest, from the interior of the rooms and the furniture, is wonderful!
The scenery, including cliffs, is beautifully drawn frame by frame, making it a great reference for backgrounds. The carpet patterns are also carefully drawn by hand.
Some of the frames show the clear air with depth, and there are many places where the background is used well. This manga is a great reference for creating an atmosphere.
On the other hand, scenes of hunting or attacking with horses have a rough background, and the variety of expressions is also a good reference.
You can see a video of the actual drawing here.

The second book is “One-Punch Man”
One-Punch Man/by ONE (Author), Yusuke Murata (Illustrator)
This is a very popular manga that has also become an anime. The artist, Yusuke Murata, has long been one of my favorite manga artists.
His drawing is powerful and threatening!
There is a good balance between the skill of the characters and the reality of the backgrounds. There are places where the backgrounds are very heavily drawn, but he also uses a lot of character lines to create shadows, etc., so there is not much difference between the backgrounds and characters, and the reader can read the manga without any sense of discomfort.
Also, the cinematic composition and powerful drawing are very helpful.
Yusuke Murata’s way of drawing effects is too good!
Effects expressing attack power and disasters are drawn realistically and boldly. The variety of expressions in this manga makes it a great reference for action illustrations.
This work is a great study of how to express reality with pen drawings and solid colors, so please take a look at it as a reference.

The third book is “Master Keaton”
Master Keaton/by Takashi Nagasaki (Author), Naoki Urasawa (Author, Creator)
Everyday realism is expressed!
The unadorned, unflashy “realism” is firmly visible, and you can feel somewhat at ease and feel the scenery you know.
The backgrounds convey a solid foreign atmosphere, cheap hotels are depicted as cheap hotels, and the scenery lets you know where they are.
The background is a solid backdrop!
The background is not too far forward, nestled behind the characters, and serves to convey a solid worldview.
The scenery is well drawn, with paintings, etc., expressing the presence or absence of assets, or explaining where they are walking in the background.
The expressions of the characters and the creation of the overall atmosphere are also very nice and dramatic, making the characters, backgrounds, and storytelling all informative in this manga.

The fourth book is “Jing: King of Bandits”
Jing: King of Bandits/by Yuichi Kumakura (Author), Kong Chang (Author), Carol Fox (Author)
This is a sequel to “King Dorobo JING” serialized in Comic Bonbon, and has been my favorite manga since then.
It’s fashionable and full of cool!
The use of light and dark, the placement of English fonts, and the placement of objects are the coolest and most instructive.
It’s a solid representation of a world that isn’t real!
It is not set in Europe or Japan, but in a world that is not real. There will be references, but the cities, etc. are completely original, creating a compelling backdrop for an original world.
I want to see some cool, original, fantastical backgrounds! If you are interested in this, please take a look at the reference material.
